A Word on Grammar

As a former UPI newsman, English teacher and journalism major, I found my heart skipping a beat when I read the cover of the Jan. 25 issue: “One in eight Americans now live in California.” What’s next? “Between he and I”? Singular subjects require singular verbs, i.e., “One in eight Americans now lives in California.”
