Trek up, glide down with these

Backcountry adventure that combines uphill aerobics and downhill thrills is one of the hottest trends in winter fitness. But you’ll probably need a backpack that carries both water and gear. Here are four models to help you snowshoe up, and ski or snowboard down.

Lots of stuff, not enough water

Indigo Vengo 32: Large day pack with convenient hydration system.

Likes: A built-in, over-the-shoulder holster holds a water bottle that can be reached without stopping. Bottle is not prone to leakage, breakage or the cleanliness problems of hydration bladders. Top-loading, cinch-shut cargo compartment has a full-length side zipper for immediate access to contents. Top lid safely stores delicate items. Numerous internal compartments for storing a shovel and other gear. Capacity of 2,000 cubic inches is expandable.

Dislikes: Does not carry snowboards. Accessible water is limited to a 20-ounce bottle, about a third the capacity of most hydration bladders. Must carry spare bottles and stop hiking to refill.

A feminine touch on the trail

Sherpani Sola 35: Backcountry day pack designed for women.

Likes: Unique pivoting shoulder straps are extra-soft and self-adjusting. Innovative sliding sternum strap that accommodates women of various sizes. Pastel colors and flowered pocket linings. Built-in ski straps. Flap-down pocket and straps hold a shovel and snowboard.

Dislikes: Includes hydration pocket and access port for the hose, but no hydration bladder. Manufacturer’s stated capacity of 2,500 cubic inches seems somewhat exaggerated.

Price: $109. (720) 214-2194, www.sherpanipacks.com.

Carries your downhill transport

Camelbak SnoBound: Small, feature-laden pack at a reasonable price.

Likes: Carries skis or a snowboard. Three-liter water bladder. Hose won’t freeze up and flop around because it is insulated and zips up into a compartment within the shoulder strap. Bladder has a large, hand-size opening that allows for easy cleaning. Pack has room for a shovel head and a soft pocket for goggles.

Dislikes: 1,497-cubic-inch capacity is ideal for using on ski lifts but too small for all-day backcountry trips.

Price: $100. (707) 792-9700, www.camelbak.com.

Crafty airflow keeps you dry

Deuter AC SnowLite: The pack that won’t overheat you.

Likes: The arched “aircomfort” design reduces perspiration by putting an inch of air space between you and the pack. Should keep you cooler during aerobic activities. Straps hold skis and poles. Has an ice-ax holder, exterior bungee straps to hold clothing and a shovel pocket.

Dislikes: Includes hydration pocket but no bladder. Won’t hold a snowboard. 1,450-cubic-inch cargo space is on the small side.
