Freshwater

Largemouth bass: Castaic Lake has a steady bite, with crawdads and plastic worms getting most fish. Jack McMullen, Saugus, caught and released 10 bass to about 5 pounds, using crawdads. Lake Casitas is finally yielding some big bass. Jerry Rago, Bishop, nabbed an 11-0, 9-8 and 8-0, using a swimbait. Pre-spawn smallmouth are moving up the water column at Diamond Valley Lake and largemouth may be close behind. Lake Perris is fair on plastics, pig-n-jigs and swimbaits. In the San Diego area, San Vicente and Lower Otay are top spots, with the latter producing a five-bass weight of 30-8 for Rodell Foster, Chula Vista, who used crawdads.

Trout: Fly fisherman at Laguna Niguel Park Lake have been catching and releasing up to 30 fish a day, to about 5 pounds, using zebra midges. Irvine Lake is loaded with big rainbows and Santa Ana River Lakes this week is receiving more than a ton of steelhead. The Owens River and Pleasant Valley Reservoir are fair to good and yielding an occasional trout to 8 pounds. Notable catches: An 18-pound rainbow at Corona Lake by Tim Garner, San Marcos; an 18-pound rainbow at Santa Ana River Lakes by John Chapman, Yorba Linda; five trout totaling 18-4 at Skinner by Daniel Evans, San Bernardino.

Striped bass: Action is fair with some quality fish landed at Castaic. Butch Brown, Castaic, caught six stripers to about 20 pounds, using swimbait. Nevada angler John Wood caught a 21-pounder on a swimbait at Willow Beach on the Colorado River. Lake Mohave is fair.

Catfish: Richard Guseman, Lakeside, caught a lake record 32-4 channel catfish using mackerel at San Diego’s Lake Murray. The Blythe-to-Yuma region of the Colorado River has been producing occasional flatheads to 20 pounds.

Panfish: Lake Isabella and Lake Wollomes near Bakersfield have crappie bite on minnows. San Diego’s Lake Henshaw is fair on mini-jigs. Lake Cachuma near Santa Barbara is a top spot as red-ear perch are biting on night crawler pieces.

Saltwater

Best bet: Santa Monica Bay halibut are becoming active, typical for this time of year, and fish to about 15 pounds are being caught, while sub-keepers are providing lots of action. Marina del Rey Sportfishingis running twilight trips for calico bass and sand bass on Fridays and Saturdays, getting fair results, fishing over structure. Jigs and 20-poundline are recommended tackle.
