A man who fled after allegedly gunning down his former girlfriend at an Anaheim gas station handcuffed himself and surrendered to authorities in a Texas town late Monday.

Gary Clifford Laine, 48, of Garden Grove told police in Kerrville, a town of 20,000 about 60 miles west of San Antonio, that he had handcuffed himself to save them the trouble and to appear less threatening.

Laine’s arrest ended a five-day manhunt.

Anaheim police flew to San Antonio on Tuesday to begin extradition procedures against Laine, who they said will face a charge of murder.

Police said Laine fled after he fatally shot Marie O’Hare, 44, of Anaheim at a gas station near Ball Road and Walnut Street on Thursday. O’Hare was with a man at a sandwich shop inside the gas station when Laine showed up and asked her to step outside to talk, said Anaheim Police Sgt. Rick Martinez.

Witnesses told police the two walked to the parking lot, where Laine fired at O’Hare numerous times in front of lunchtime patrons and fled. She died at the scene.

Laine surrendered about 11:45 p.m. Monday to police in Kerrville, about 230 miles from where he lived in 1999 and where relatives might still live, police said.

Laine walked in with his wrists in handcuffs, said Kerrville Police Lt. Joseph Lanning. Lanning said Laine said he had hitchhiked to the police station after his truck broke down about 50 miles outside Kerrville.

Police, however, said they found the truck parked behind the police station. Anaheim police have a warrant to search the vehicle.
