Damaged Water Tanks to Force Limits on Usage

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The city’s two earthquake-damaged water tanks can be fixed, but residents will have to limit water use this summer.

City Manager Jim App told the City Council that it was initially thought the older tank, built in 1972, would need to be demolished and replaced at a cost of $4 million. But experts have determined it can be repaired for about $1 million. A water tank built in 2001 will cost about $400,000 to repair, he said.

Still, water usage will need to be cut by about 25% this summer because the older tank probably won’t be fixed by then, App said.
