An air traffic controller who directed a passenger plane that collided with a cargo aircraft over Germany was stabbed to death at his Zurich home, police said. They are investigating a possible link between the events.

The July 2002 crash killed 71 people, including dozens of Russian children. The attacker was 50 to 55 years old and possibly Eastern European. He showed up at the controller’s residence, spoke briefly in broken German, stabbed him and fled.
