Japan’s Fair Trade Commission said it was investigating the Japanese unit of Microsoft Corp. on suspicion of violating antitrust laws.

The commission said it believed Microsoft imposed unfair conditions on computer makers wanting to license its Windows XP operating system software.

A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed that representatives of the fair-trade body were at its headquarters but said she had no further details.

The investigation is only the latest for Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft, which is plagued by accusations that it has abused its monopoly on PC operating systems to push prices higher or harm rivals.
