‘Chicago’ with N.Y. vibe

Share

Broadway/LA presents the return of “Chicago,” John Kander and Fred Ebb’s stage musical-turned-Oscar-winning film, with Bob Fosse’s signature choreography.

The name of the Broadway/LA series has never been so fitting: The three leads in this cast will be coming to Southern California direct from Broadway, where they all appeared at the Ambassador Theatre through Dec. 28.

Patrick Swayze, of “Dirty Dancing” fame, plays lawyer Billy Flynn. Bianca Marroquin, who first played the role of Roxie Hart in Spanish in Mexico City, made her Broadway debut in the role in 2002.

Reva Rice, who also starred in Broadway productions of “Starlight Express” and “Fosse,” plays Velma Kelly.

“Chicago,” about Roxie, the good girl gone bad for whom a murder trial is just another way to become famous, has racked up nearly 3,000 performances since opening on Broadway in late 1996. It won six Tony Awards, including best revival, in 1997; the 2002 film version won six Oscars.
