Pasadena-based mutual fund managers Howard Schow, Theo Kolokotrones and Joel Fried collectively were named “domestic stock fund manager of the year” for 2003 by Morningstar Inc. Their firm, Primecap Management Co., manages the Vanguard Primecap fund and the Vanguard Capital Opportunity fund for Vanguard Group. Morningstar said the team “has a knack for finding great out-of-favor stocks.” Primecap fund gained 38% in 2003; Capital Opportunity soared 50%.

Morningstar also named Bill Fries, manager of the Thornburg International Value fund, as manager of the year in the foreign-stock category. The fund rose 40% last year.
