Despite doubts on the part of elected officials, engineering firms plan to proceed with what would be the state’s first for-profit desalination plant.

A consortium of firms has completed a study that shows it would be financially feasible to build a plant near Morro Bay that would convert 5 million gallons of seawater a day into drinking water.

The decision to move ahead with the project comes as San Luis Obispo County proceeds with its own major water project, the Nacimiento pipeline, which would cost $170 million and supply water to 15 communities.
