The local stretch of a world-class bicycle race has been canceled because corporate sponsorship fell flat, the promoter said.

The rest of the four-day Sea Otter Classic will go on as planned this spring in Monterey, where it has taken place for the last 14 years.

The Redwood City leg of the race debuted last year amid controversy when 150 male bicyclists said that a hilly part of the route was too dangerous and refused to finish the event.

Some female cyclists finished the entire course last year.
