Allan Houston stood near midcourt defending Michael Finley, repeatedly glancing over at Coach Don Chaney to see whether he should foul.

Down by four points with less than 30 seconds remaining in overtime, Houston waited nearly 12 seconds before fouling Finley.

The crowd at Madison Square Garden went wild.

A chant of “Fire Chaney!” filled the arena once again as the New York Knicks, after rallying from a 20-point deficit in the second half, lost to the Dallas Mavericks, 127-121, Monday night at New York.

“It was bad communication. I’ll take the blame for that,” Chaney said after the Knicks lost for the fifth time in six games.

Memphis 115, Golden State 113 -- Shane Battier scored six of his 14 points in the second overtime, including the go-ahead basket at Oakland, as the Grizzlies won their second straight road game.

It was the second straight overtime game for both teams.

Philadelphia 87, Orlando 82 -- Allen Iverson broke out of his slump to score 26 points, and the 76ers survived fourth-quarter shooting problems at Orlando, Fla.

The 76ers missed 14 of 17 shots in the fourth quarter, including their last 10, but made eight of 10 free throws down the stretch.
