Study Finds Anti-Gay Student Harassment

About 7.5% of the state’s middle and high school students are harassed because they are gay or perceived to be, according to a study by the California Safe Schools Coalition and UC Davis’ 4-H Center for Youth Development. The bullying continues four years after a state anti-harassment law took effect.
Researchers noted ways that schools can alleviate the problem, including banning discrimination against gays, having a teacher step in when harassment occurs and forming a gay-straight alliance club on campus.
