Fewer Babies Are Being Abandoned, County Says
Los Angeles County’s public information campaign to prevent mothers from abandoning newborn babies has shown some success, according to a report released Tuesday.
In 2002, 10 infants were safely surrendered at hospitals or other designated places, said the report by the county’s Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect.
Thirteen infants were abandoned, eight of whom were found dead.
That marks an improvement over 2001, when the program began. No infants were safely surrendered in the county that year and 14 were abandoned. Eleven died.
