City Council Considers Goats to Clear Brush

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The City Council is considering using goats to nibble down brush around homes as a fire-prevention measure, officials said Tuesday.

Ann Hix, deputy director of the Park and Recreation Department, said a Chino firm has offered to rent 35 to 50 goats, and two guard dogs, to clear away brush. The city is looking for brush management ideas after the Cedar fire last year that destroyed nearly 300 homes.

“We should explore the goat idea,” Mayor Dick Murphy said Tuesday as the council adopted an ordinance requiring 100 feet of clearance between vegetation and homes.
