A San Joaquin County correctional officer and a retired sheriff’s deputy were indicted and charged by a public grand jury in a San Joaquin County courtroom in connection with the death in September of a 34-year-old jail inmate, attorneys said.

Mondez Denmon was arrested on a domestic-violence charge and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail at 1:46 p.m. on Sept. 5. Less than seven hours later, he died of asphyxiation.

After a weeklong public hearing, Correctional Officer Gregory Fuher was charged with a felony, accused of unnecessarily assaulting or beating Denmon. Retired Deputy Bruce Thrasher was charged with misdemeanor battery. Fuher could get three years in prison, and Thrasher six months in jail if convicted.
