Air Force Rescues 350 Schoolchildren
Air force helicopters in northeastern India rescued 350 children from the roof of their school, which was submerged in swirling flood waters, a school administrator said.
At least 133 people have been swept away, drowned, crushed under collapsing homes or killed in landslides in this year’s monsoon rains. Thousands have been left homeless or stranded by floods.
School administrator Samir Sinha said soldiers on foot were unable to reach the school, located in the state of Assam, so two helicopters carried out the rescue.
The children were taken to a college campus in a dry area, Sinha said.
