Few Run as Beach Awaits

One look at the entries today at Hollywood Park and it is clear Del Mar is almost here.

Only 52 horses are entered in the eight races as owners and trainers wait to run by the beach in six days.

Half of the six races in the pick six, which has a carry-over of $140,892, drew fields of five. In the first of those, Interceptor will try for his second lifetime win against Trendy, King Simpatia, Fantastic Groom and Devote in the third, a $50,000 allowance at 1 1/8 miles on the turf.

Owned by Ted Shapiro and trained by Pat Gallagher, Interceptor, an English-bred, was third in his U.S. debut June 12. Danny Sorenson will ride the 4-year-old Hector Protector colt.

In the fifth, Aziyan is the one to catch against Political Rhetoric, Black Horse Money, Power Boy and A Gallant Discover. Bonaire, Stop The Talking, Market Garden, The Toast Of Troy and Brocky’s Dream will run in the seventh, a $50,000 optional claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

Race of the day: Fleet Indian, who is unbeaten in three starts for owner Stan Fulton and trainer Jim Toner, will face open company for the first time in today’s eighth at Belmont Park. Unchallenged against New York-breds, the Indian Charlie filly will face seven opponents in the $45,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles. Edgar Prado will ride.

One for the road: Yankee Magic has trained as if he can run for high-percentage trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. and can win at first asking in today’s fourth at Belmont. John Velazquez will be aboard the 2-year-old son of Distinctive Pro in the race at 5 1/2 furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick all using Master Designer and Evrybdyluvsdaheat in the first, Norton Peak and She Roves in the second, Interceptor in the third, Megabyte in the fourth, Aziyan in the fifth, Spicoli and Turn The Kee in the sixth, Market Garden and The Toast Of Troy in the seventh and Ninadivina in the eighth.
