Chirac Says Sharon Isn’t Welcome to Visit

President Jacques Chirac said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon would not be welcome in France until he gave a satisfactory explanation for saying that Jews in that country should go to Israel to escape “the wildest anti-Semitism.”
After the sharp response by Chirac and other French authorities, Israeli officials said Sharon’s remarks were taken out of context. They also praised steps France has taken to stop a surge in violence against Jews.
