The Arabs Kept Silent on Hussein’s Brutality
Re “Army Calls Abuses of Detainees ‘Aberrations,’ ” July 23: Saddam Hussein’s regime indiscriminately put to death Iraqi citizens on a daily basis during the term of his brutal dictatorship as evidenced by mass graves as well as videotaped testimonials from Iraqis. Yet where was the outcry from the Iraqi people or the Arab community?

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld knew all about the inhumane and degrading treatment [of Iraqi detainees] and reported it to the president months before the damning photos surfaced. The Red Cross report had been submitted even prior to that. The fact is President Bush got caught in his own irresponsible refusal to follow the rule of law.
