Deal to fix land near Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon Trust has struck a deal to protect nearly 1 million acres of timber and desert near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
The $4.5-million acquisition of the Kane and Two Mile ranches must be completed in one year. Preservationists want to restore lands damaged by grazing and drought.
The land would link the Grand Canyon to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah and the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona. It is one of the biggest land-trust purchases in the nation.
“This purchase not only protects this amazing area but helps protect all these other lands by creating a buffer zone,” says Trust spokesman Richard Mayol.
The Trust has raised about $1.5 million for the purchase, and the Conservation Fund will help raise the remainder.
