A negotiator in North Korea’s nuclear talks with Washington is expected to make a rare trip to the United States next month in a sign of fresh attempts to make progress on the 21-month-old crisis.

Gen. Ri Gun, deputy head of U.S. affairs at North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, has been invited for informal talks by a think tank in New York, Chinese officials said. Ri’s trip would follow a trip to Washington this month by Pyongyang’s U.N. ambassador -- the first such visit allowed by President Bush.
