Stadler Pleads Guilty After Arrest for Drunk Driving

Golfer Craig Stadler pleaded guilty Wednesday to operating a vehicle while impaired after he was arrested for drunk driving. He withdrew from the Farmers Charity Classic in Ada Township, Mich.

Stadler, 51, was charged with driving while intoxicated after his arrest Monday evening in nearby Ionia County. He pleaded guilty to the reduced count, assistant Ionia County prosecutor Lori Kirkhoff said.

The New York Giants are expected to announce today the signing of two-time NFL most valuable player Kurt Warner, according to a report in Newsday.

Warner, 32, will compete with rookie Eli Manning for the starting quarterback job.

Pittsburgh released linebacker Jason Gildon, 31, the franchise’s sack leader and defensive captain the last three years.

Denver released disgruntled defensive tackle Daryl Gardener, who was suspended twice and started only five games last season.

The Denver Post reported that Gardener is close to signing a four-year contract with Cincinnati.

Washington cut linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, running back Trung Canidate and guard Dave Fiore. The team signed 12-year veteran tight end Fred Baxter.

The L.A. Coliseum Commission has hired financial consultant Bill Rhoda of CSL, an advisory and planning firm specializing in providing consulting services to the sports, entertainment and leisure industries. Rhoda has worked on several NFL stadium deals, including ones in Nashville, Cleveland and Denver.

Auto Racing

The rating for the rain-shortened Indianapolis 500 was down 11% from last year, and was lower than the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 race for the third year in a row.

The Indy 500, telecast by ABC, got a 4.1 rating. Fox’s coverage of the Coca-Cola 600 got a 5.0 rating. The 22% disparity was the largest since the NASCAR races overtook the Indy 500 in the ratings three years ago.

NASCAR driver Scott Wimmer was convicted of driving while impaired and leaving the scene of a January accident.

He received a 60-day suspended sentence and was placed on unsupervised probation for a year. Wimmer can still compete on the circuit.

Track and Field

Ukrainian shot putter Vita Pavlysh, 35, was stripped of her world indoor title and banned from the sport for life after testing positive for steroids a second time. Pavlysh tested positive in March during the world indoor championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Ethiopia’s Berhane Adere won the 5,000 meters at an International Assn. of Athletics Federation meet in Milan, Italy. She won in 14 minutes 36.92 seconds.

Chamique Holdsclaw made four free throws in the last minute and finished with 16 points to lead the Washington Mystics to a 65-63 victory over the Detroit Shock in front of 9,687 in a WNBA game at Auburn Hills, Mich.
