Now that the World War II Memorial has been formally dedicated, I hope there is still room for a few more thoughts on the matter beyond letters responding to Christopher Knight’s article (“A Memorial to Forget,” May 23).

On the bright side, the new memorial can be seen as being Hitler’s tomb. Unfortunately, the chosen design makes it look all too much like Hitler’s Tomb.

Beyond its appearance, it sends a message to all servicemen and women who didn’t have the benefit of fighting in World War II: No matter how great the conflict, how noble its cause, or how great your sacrifice, you will always be second-class soldiers, airmen and sailors in a second-rate war.

Is that the message we want to send to current and future generations who are, and will be, brave enough to march into combat to keep us safe and free?
