Police broke up a large cockfighting and gambling operation at a local dairy over the weekend, detaining 30 spectators and ordering 40 injured fighting roosters to be destroyed.

Immigration and Naturalization Service agents deported 12 of the 30 spectators, who had paid $20 apiece to watch the roosters fight inside a tarp-covered, 2,000-square-foot arena that included two blackjack tables and food and drink distribution, according to a spokesman for the Ontario Police Department. The arena was surrounded by stacks of hay, and a ladder gave access to a rooftop lookout.

The owner of the property, in the 7400 block of East Schaefer Avenue, was cited on charges of illegally operating a business, unlawful disposal of animal carcasses and erecting an illegal structure.
