Supreme Court Avoids Ruling on Pledge
The Supreme Court finds no difficulty in settling a hotly disputed presidential election, choosing as the winner the brother of the governor of the state in which the vote counting was questioned, and yet it chickens out on keeping church and state separate by avoiding making a decision on the Pledge of Allegiance (June 15).
We all know that “under God” was a McCarthy-era, Red-baiting addition to the pledge, but religionists would have us believe that returning the pledge to its original form is too big a decision for the court. It is not. The court just did not have the courage to make a strong statement. It is the hope of many in this country that someday freedom from religion will come to pass and religious oppression of our children in their daily school lives will end.

I’m sure the Supreme Being thanks the Supreme Court for its decision on the Pledge of Allegiance. As Ronald Reagan said, “If we ever forget that we are one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.”
