Quick Frequent-Flier Check-In Slated

The Transportation Security Administration and United Airlines will initiate a program at Los Angeles International Airport late next month to speed pre-screened frequent fliers through security checkpoints, officials said Wednesday.

The Registered Traveler Program will seek volunteers who fly at least once a week in selected markets. Each will provide the TSA with his or her name, address, phone number and date of birth, along with a biometric imprint of a finger and an iris.

Volunteers who pass background checks will be registered and allowed to use special screening lanes at participating airports, where their imprints will be checked. The volunteers will still pass through primary magnetic screening systems, but if they do not set off an alarm, they will not be subject to random secondary screening.

Northwest Airlines will offer the program at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport this month. Continental Airlines will participate at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston in early August. By late August, the plan will be available to American Airlines fliers at Boston’s Logan International Airport and at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
