News About Edwards Quitting Hurt Turnout

Share

The news media were incredibly irresponsible when they announced, on election day at 5 p.m. Pacific Time, that Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) was going to pull out of the race on Wednesday. Though this news hardly changed the outcome of the primary results, it probably suppressed turnout among those who were planning on voting later in the day, thus affecting down-ballot races on the West Coast. Not to mention that the news likely gave the false impression that a person’s vote on the West Coast “doesn’t count.”
