Ruscha photos given to Whitney
Three months after Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art acquired Edward Ruscha’s “Chocolate Room,” a conceptual installation that covers walls of an entire room with shingle-like sheets of chocolate-coated paper, New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art has received a gift of 456 photographs and prints by the L.A.-based artist. The donation, announced Friday, makes the Whitney the principal repository of Ruscha’s photographic works.
Primarily a donation from the Leonard and Evelyn Lauder Foundation, the gift was augmented by contributions from Ruscha and Whitney trustee Thomas Tuft and his wife, Diane. The cache includes 343 vintage photographs -- most shot on a 1961 tour of Europe -- original prints from the artist’s books and a few unpublished photographs.
The Whitney plans to present a show on the new acquisition, opening June 24, along with an exhibition of Ruscha’s drawings.
