‘The Island’ really rocked
This was the longtime Hollywood Hills home of rock ‘n’ roll legend Chuck Berry. He sold it in December 2000, according to public records. The buyer has just finished remodeling it and has put the house, built in 1923, back on the market.
During the several decades the guitarist and musical icon, now 77, lived in the home, his music was an inspiration to countless groups, including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Berry, who first appeared on the music scene in the ‘50s, had a number of comeback recordings in the ‘70s and in 1972 had his first No. 1 pop-chart hit with “My Ding-A-Ling.” During the ‘80s, when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he allowed the house to be used for film shoots.
Called “The Island,” the two-story Mediterranean villa and its grounds are encircled by a street.
About this house: It sits on a large, flat lot with a pool, spa and grassy area where a tennis court once stood. The grounds are gated. There is a detached guesthouse. A statue of a sheep has become a neighborhood landmark after standing guard in front of the house for decades.
