The Davis-Besse nuclear power plant started generating electricity Tuesday for the first time since it was shut down more than two years ago, when inspectors found that acid had eaten nearly all the way through a steel lid on the reactor.

The plant was restarted in early morning and by afternoon was at 21% of full power, producing about 120 megawatts of electricity, plant spokesman Richard Wilkins said. Full power should come in 10 to 14 days.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave operator FirstEnergy Corp. of Akron permission a week ago to restart the reactor.
