A biotechnology firm announced Monday it was building a $44-million plant to convert lawn trimmings into compressed natural gas for use in public and private vehicles.

Santa Monica-based BioConverter plans to begin the project this fall, and expects to provide city vehicles, school buses and private fleets with the clean-burning fuel by 2006, according to a company news release. The facility would also be used to create liquid plant food.

A larger biofuel project for the city of Los Angeles is awaiting approval from the City Council.
