Woman, 87, Dies in Car Collision

An 87-year-old Thousand Oaks woman was killed when the car she was driving was broadsided by an SUV, authorities said Wednesday.

Nellie Dishno and her husband Thomas, 88, were northbound on Skyline Drive about 3:10 p.m. Tuesday when the accident occurred.

After stopping her 1994 Buick Century at Hillcrest Drive, Dishno began to drive through the intersection into the path of a 2002 GMC Yukon driven by 42-year-old Katherine Hopkins of Thousand Oaks.

The Yukon struck the left front section of the Buick and the driver’s door. Nellie Dishno died at the scene and her husband was taken by ambulance to Los Robles Regional Medical Center with broken ribs and facial cuts, authorities said. He remained hospitalized in fair condition Wednesday afternoon.

Hopkins, who was transporting two of her children from school at the time of the accident, was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center for treatment, authorities said.

She voluntarily submitted to a blood test and was released, authorities said. The children were uninjured and left the accident scene with a family friend.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Patti Salas said it would be several weeks before investigators determined whether excessive speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.

“It’s just a tragic accident,” Salas said.
