Sprinter’s Lawsuit Stalls

The U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Track & Field have been dismissed from a lawsuit filed by sprinter Jerome Young, effectively ending the case, according to court records.

Young filed the suit Feb. 4 in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis after their separate confirmations that he was the athlete who tested positive for the steroid nandrolone in 1999 but was allowed to compete at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. The suit asked for unspecified damages.

The matter is the subject of an international arbitration. Track’s worldwide governing body, the International Assn. of Athletics Federations, has said it believes a USATF appeal panel was wrong in clearing Young to compete.

At stake are the gold medals won in Sydney by Young and five other Americans, including Michael Johnson, in the 1,600-meter relay.

Court records show that USATF was dismissed from the case March 17 and the USOC on March 22.
