An oil tanker truck crashed and exploded on Interstate 95 in Bridgeport, starting a huge fire that severely damaged bridges in both directions on the highway between New York and Boston, state police said.

The heavily used artery may be closed for weeks, state police said. Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions on the stretch of highway that handles nearly 120,000 vehicles a day.
