Interest-Free Loans for Needy Families
Re “System for Loans Takes Page From the Jewish Past” (March 23), about a loan program created by the Shefa Fund designed to assist low- to moderate-income families in the Los Angeles area that may be unable to seek aid elsewhere: As I read through the article, I was certain there would be a mention of the Jewish Free Loan Assn., a nonprofit, nonsectarian agency that has been lending interest-free money to the Los Angeles community for 100 years. But it was nowhere to be found.
Jewish Free Loan, a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation and the United Way, has over $5.1 million in loans circulating throughout the community and has assisted over 300,000 families with loans for housing, subsistence, vocational training, expanding small businesses, short-term home healthcare, undergraduate and graduate studies and much more.
