Suspected Tunnel a Dilemma for Town
CALEXICO, Calif. — U.S. authorities want to dig up an area in Calexico where satellite images indicate an incomplete cross-border tunnel may be located, a city councilman said.
But officials in the border town 100 miles east of San Diego say they don’t want to be stuck with the bill, as they were last year when they spent $10,000 to dig up two unfinished tunnels.
“We aren’t saying ‘no.’ We are just saying, ‘What can you do about this to help us out?’ ” Calexico Councilman John Renison said.
Lauren Mack, spokeswoman for the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Diego, said the agency is seeking “funding sources to excavate any possible tunnels in the area or to reimburse the city to excavate.”
