Ramirez Cartoon Fosters Homophobia

Share

Michael Ramirez’s right-wing editorial cartoons are by turns sophomoric and shrill, suffering either from a dearth of insight or an excess of spleen. With his March 27 (Commentary) attack on gay marriage, add loopy logic to the list.

Ramirez hoists himself on his own petard with his cartoon’s claim that condoning gay marriage sends us down a slippery slope to legalizing father-son incest.

Pray tell, Mr. Ramirez, how marriage between a man and a woman is any less likely to legitimate father-daughter incest -- or mother-son, for that matter?

As the father of a gay son, and immensely proud of him, I am appalled at the crudity of Ramirez’s editorial cartoon on gay marriage. His view does nothing to foster understanding nor a reasoned dialogue of this recent social phenomenon.

It is akin to a burning cross planted in the yard of reason. It is a homophobic view that the more enlightened among us have moved far beyond.

Ramirez’s cartoons are a breath of fresh air in pages full of pseudo-socialist propaganda in your Commentary section. People like Roger Hollander (letter, March 29) need to learn a little tolerance for opposing points of view rather than criticizing an excellent artist with an excellent sense of humor.
