Clemens Picks Up His 315th Victory

Roger Clemens won his 315th game in a 6-1 home victory for Houston over Cincinnati, despite walking four of the first seven batters he faced, including D’Angelo Jimenez with the bases loaded.

Clemens moved past Gaylord Perry for 15th place on the career win list; it was his ninth victory in a row. The next person on the list is Phil Niekro with 318.

Lance Berkman homered and drove in two runs to lead the Astros. The Reds’ Jose Acevedo gave up three runs and nine hits in six innings.

St. Louis 4, Chicago Cubs 3 -- LaTroy Hawkins walked Mike Matheny to force in the game-winning run in the ninth inning, spoiling a sharp outing by the Cubs’ Kerry Wood at St. Louis.

Pittsburgh 4, Milwaukee 2 -- Kris Benson pitched into the eighth inning and Raul Mondesi had three doubles for the Pirates at Milwaukee. Benson struck out seven in his longest outing since May 27, 2003.

The Brewers’ Ben Sheets gave up three runs and seven hits in eight innings.

Philadelphia 4, Arizona 0 -- Randy Wolf extended his scoreless innings streak to 21, and Bobby Abreu and Jim Thome hit consecutive homers to lead the Phillies at home. The Diamondbacks’ Danny Bautista singled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 21 games, the longest active such streak in the majors.

San Diego 7, New York Mets 6 -- Brian Giles hit a two-run home run at San Diego to start the Padres’ comeback from a five-run deficit. The Mets scored five in the first off Padre starter Brain Lawrence (3-2), but he settled down and didn’t give up a run over the next four innings.

Atlanta at Colorado, ppd. -- The game was postponed by a snowstorm. It will be made up as part of a split doubleheader today. Both managers said they would push back their rotation.
