Bettors Look to Churchill

The Kentucky Derby is over, but a lot of eyes will still be focused on Churchill Downs today.

Thanks to a parade of longshots on the Derby undercard, including upsets by Shaconage and Mayo On The Side, there is a pick six carry-over of $268,246 awaiting players this afternoon.

The pick six begins with the fifth race and, given the size of the fields and the wide-open nature of several of the races, there could well be another carry-over Thursday.

One horse who will get a lot of pick six attention is Red Wing Evan, who almost certainly will be favored in the sixth, a $40,000 claimer for older horses at 1 1/16 miles.

Owned by B. Wayne Hughes and trained by Paul McGee, the son of A.P. Indy has crossed the wire first in his last four races, although he was disqualified Dec. 12 at Turfway Park.

Pat Day will ride Red Wing Evan, who began his career racing in California for trainer Ron Ellis.

The other races in the pick six are a route for $15,000 maiden claimers, an $80,000 claimer at seven furlongs for 3-year-olds, an optional claimer for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles and a pair of turf races -- a starter allowance for older horses and a maiden contest for fillies and mares.

Race of the day: Saint Buddy, who was last seen finishing third in the Santa Anita Handicap on March 6, returns to the grass for trainer Rafael Becerra in today’s fifth, a $54,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles, at Hollywood Park.

One for the road: Alumni Hall overcame a troubled trip to win at 17-1 in his debut at Keeneland on April 3 and should be even more comfortable at a longer distance in today’s sixth, a $46,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles, at Belmont Park. Jerry Bailey will ride the 5-year-old A.P. Indy horse for trainer Neil Howard on the first day of Belmont’s 60-day, spring-summer meet.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Saint Buddy, Royal Price and Bayamo in the fifth, Devil Badgett in the sixth, Seattle Borders, Unrivalled and Wild Babe in the seventh and Mr Magic, Port Ilse and Questionable World in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/25. Money: Previous day/meet total: $17.20/$141.20. Total money bet: $174.
