Immigration Is About Following the Law

Re “Dueling Immigration Ideas Frame a Key Election Issue,” May 1:

The Republicans and Democrats are proposing plans that will give people U.S. citizenship in the wrong order. The whole point of the immigration service is to check people before they enter the United States, not afterward. Neither bill will change the current situation. People will still enter the U.S. illegally. Both parties should concentrate on returning people who break the law.

This is not an argument over who deserves to be here and who doesn’t. This is about who follows the law. Once the borders are secure, make it easier to follow the law. Speed up the naturalization process, lower fees and provide other improvements.
