California could be the first state in the country to fine motorists who smoke while driving with young children in the car if a bill passed by an Assembly committee Wednesday becomes law.

The bill, now heading to the full Assembly, would impose fines up to $96.

Assemblyman Marco Firebaugh (D-South Gate) said his bill would give children “much-needed protections” against health problems caused by breathing tobacco smoke. California law already bars smoking in most enclosed workplaces, including bars.
