Coastal Commission Not Budging on Boating Center

The California Coastal Commission rejected a claim Thursday by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors that the state panel acted improperly when it turned down a proposal to build a boating center at Channel Islands Harbor.

The commission voted in February to block development of the boating instruction and safety center, contending that the project was inconsistent with the harbor’s overall zoning plan. The harbor is owned by the county.

The county argued that during the February hearing a motion to “approve with conditions” failed, but no vote was ever taken by the commission to reject the project outright.

Meeting in San Rafael on Thursday, the commission reaffirmed its position after a closed session with lawyers.

The boating center is a key element in the county’s overall plan to upgrade the aging harbor near Oxnard.

Harbor Director Lyn Krieger could not be reached for comment.
