Injury hinders journey home

Adrienne PARKS’ article, “Hawaii or Bust: Navigating Airports With a Broken Leg,” [May 2] brought back “frond” memories.

I was injured while vacationing in Anguilla. While I too enjoyed the clattering of palm fronds and tropical weather, I did not enjoy my journey back to Los Angeles.

I went into shock when the local airline informed me that they would not fly me to St. Martin the following morning because “they do not fly invalids.”

I had to charter a private plane. The expense was the least of my concerns. I lost an entire day because of limited flight availability.

The private plane was something you would expect to find at FAO Schwarz, and the pilots were sporting colorful Caribbean party attire. There were three more flights to get home, and none was a nonstop.

I was ceremoniously loaded and unloaded via wheelchairs and strong arms, all the time with my right leg propped on two hotel pillows.

I was whisked through the length of the Dallas/Fort Worth airport on a motorized luggage cart with a chauffeur who thought he was a race car driver.
