The U.S. military said Saturday that it had found “no evidence of a wedding” at the site of an airstrike that killed about 40 people last week near the border with Syria, adding that evidence found so far suggested the target was a desert base for foreign terrorists sneaking into Iraq.

Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, chief military spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq, showed slides of items that U.S. troops found at the site, including military binoculars, guns and battery packs that could be used to trigger roadside bombs.

He said “terrorist manuals,” telephone numbers for Afghanistan and foreign passports also were recovered there.

Survivors said they had just finished a wedding celebration when bombs fell Wednesday.
