The Defense Department last week also identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Michael C. Campbell, 34, of Marshfield, Mo.; specialist, Army. Campbell was killed Wednesday when his convoy vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Samarra, Iraq. He was assigned to Headquarters, Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Michael M. Carey, 20, of Prince George, Va.; private first class, Marine Corps. Carey was killed Tuesday when he apparently fell into a canal in Iraq and drowned. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

William D. Chaney, 59, of Schaumburg, Ill.; staff sergeant, Army National Guard. Chaney died Tuesday of complications from surgery in Landstuhl, Germany, where he was taken because of a sudden medical condition detected in Iraq. He was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 106th Aviation Regiment, Army National Guard in Chicago.

Leonard M. Cowherd, 22, of Culpeper, Va.; second lieutenant, Army. Cowherd was killed May 16 when he was hit by sniper and rocket-propelled grenade fire while securing a building near the Mukhayam Mosque in Karbala, Iraq. He was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Division in Friedberg, Germany.

Pedro I. Espaillat Jr., 20, of Colombia, Tenn.; senior airman, Air Force. Espaillat died May 15 of nonhostile injuries in Kirkuk, Iraq. He was assigned to the 4th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C.

Joseph P. Garyantes, 34, of Rehoboth, Del.; staff sergeant, Army. Garyantes was killed Tuesday by sniper fire while on a combat patrol in Muqdadiyah, Iraq. He was assigned to B Company, 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in Vilseck, Germany.

Leslie D. Jackson, 18, of Richmond, Va.; private first class, Army. Jackson was killed Thursday when her military vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Baghdad. She was assigned to A Company, 115th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Rene Ledesma, 34, of Abilene, Texas; staff sergeant, Army. Ledesma was killed May 15 when an improvised explosive device exploded near his Bradley fighting vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Troy L. Miranda, 44, of Little Rock, Ark.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Miranda was killed Thursday when a grenade was thrown near his foot patrol in Baghdad. He was a member of C Company, 1st Battalion, 153rd Infantry Regiment, 39th Brigade Combat Team, Army National Guard in DeQueen, Ark., assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division.

Bruce E. Price, 37, of Fayetteville, N.C., chief warrant officer, Army. Price was killed May 15 when his unit was ambushed with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in Kajaki, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Bob W. Roberts, 30, of Newport, Ore.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Roberts was killed Monday by hostile fire in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Philip I. Spakosky, 25, of Browns Mill, N.J.; specialist, Army. Spakosky died May 14 in Baghdad of injuries suffered the day before when he was shot by a sniper in Karbala, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 37th Armor, 1st Armored Division in Friedberg, Germany.

Brandon C. Sturdy, 19, of Urbandale, Iowa; private first class, Marine Corps. Sturdy was killed May 13 by hostile fire in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.
