Last Words for Aaron McGruder

I have just returned from Uzbekistan, having served a deployment as flight surgeon with the 746th Expeditionary Air Squadron, and flying combat and combat support missions in Afghanistan. I read the article on Aaron McGruder last night (“He’s Gotta Fight the Powers That Be,” by Greg Braxton, April 25).

Like his protagonist, the humorless, hostile, arrogant Huey, McGruder is angry, but not as a result of actual experience. Huey’s pronouncements, like McGruder’s, are rooted in the vicarious worlds of media and entertainment. Both proclaim opinions that they have no authority to make, other than the right of free speech.

It’s unnecessary to mention that McGruder is unpatriotic. He has never served his country. Braxton refers to him as a “warrior,” but he is no more a warrior than are the dolls in his “Star Wars” collection.

From reading and loving McGruder’s comic strip, I have discovered that this 46-year-old white male is an angry young black man.
