Stanton Area Kennels Face Noise Law

Neighbors of an unincorporated area near Stanton who have complained for years about barking from commercial kennels will have a new remedy under a noise ordinance given its first reading on Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.

Reacting to complaints, the board changed language in the county’s noise ordinance to make it easier to enforce in the neighborhood north of Katella Avenue.

Previously, the neighborhood was zoned for agricultural use and designated by a judge as exempt from the noise ordinance.

If the board gives its final approval to the changes next month, county officials will notify the owners of 13 kennels that they could face prosecution if they allow barking dogs to disturb residents, said Bryan Speegle, director of resources and development management for the county. Violations are misdemeanors punished by fines, jail or both.

Planning officials will work with the Sheriff’s Department and the district attorney’s office on how to enforce the ordinance, Speegle said.
