Why Not Crack Down on L.A.’s Tax Scofflaws?

Share

Re “L.A.’s City Tax Wreck,” editorial, May 21: Regardless of the tax rates, why isn’t the Los Angeles Office of Finance concentrating on collecting from the scofflaws so that the rest of us can pay more equitable rates? Thousands of businesses in this city pay nothing at all. For every large body shop (like the Seller’s International Body Shop) that pays more than $9,000, there are dozens of two- and three-man shops that never even bother to register.

I’ll bet that if the city assigned one officer to go door to door, 40 hours a week, writing citations for not having a business license card on display, millions of dollars in new registrations would result, not to mention millions more in annual renewals.
