Controversy thy name is Madonna

So Madonna let Robert Hilburn down (“Madonna’s Immaterial Social Statement,” May 26)? Of course she did. She’s done what men dread most: matured into a thoughtful woman who speaks her mind about substantive issues. Maybe her show didn’t tantalize, but singing about peace in this bellicose and repressive era is the boldest thing she’s ever done.

I think the issue with Madonna is not so much that she has traded sexual politics for political spirituality. It is that she has sacrificed discourse for convention. Madonna has always been a tease without ever committing fully toward a conviction or purpose other than to feed her masses, as well as her purse. How else to explain this concert’s greatest hits package and relatively short set at inflated prices?

I have seen all but one of Madonna’s tours live and this was the most perfect show I have had the pleasure of attending. As a fan, this was exactly what I wanted. The antiwar statement, while understood, was not pushed down the audience’s throat. The show focused on Madonna and the music. What more do you need?
